ES+ | No.3 | 2025/2026 Regina Llopis studied mathematics at the University of Maryland in the United States and earned a PhD in applied mathematics and artificial intelligence (AI) from the University of California, Berkeley. She was a professor at Simón Bolívar University and, together with her husband, Antonio Trias Bonet, moved to Spain so that their eldest son could receive the special education he needed, which was not available in Venezuela. In 1988, they jointly founded the company they currently lead, Group AIA. Why do children dislike mathematics? Are they being poorly taught? You need to love and convey your passion for mathematics so that children will enjoy it. We have a group of teachers who teach mathematics, which they did not necessarily study, as a side activity to their own discipline. With calculators available, why do children need to learn such basic things as square roots? Because we also teach them more basic concepts, such as the algorithms for addition, subtraction and division, and they can also use a calculator to add and subtract. So it’s not a waste of time. Does technology help us as much as we would expect? Very much so. If it does not help us more, it is because we do not know how to incorporate it. There must be the political will to adopt it. And that’s not so simple. What can Artificial Intelligence (AI) do for us in the future? The transformation in healthcare is spectacular. In analysing a CT scan, AI outperforms any diagnosis made by an expert doctor. Can AI harm us? Are you more concerned about the technological advances or the ethics of using these technologies? Like any technology, it can be used for good or it can be misused and cause harm to humanity. But ethics is absolutely essential. It must be accountable to the law. Otherwise, collective trust cannot be built and progress cannot be made. Does AI inherit our demons? We are a society with intrinsic biases. We can try to mitigate this. However, there is no clear solution. Do you like politics? Politics, yes. Politicking, no. What does artificial intelligence bring to politics? Everything from electoral metrics to polls on a candidate’s potential, or historical analysis of prospects to avoid falling into autocracies and monarchies that are not democratic, or ending up with people who think they are emperors, like Donald Trump. 109
